On Wednesday the 19th of November the Franco-British Chamber of Commerce & Industry, in association with the Institute of Directors, put on a breakfast seminar at the Lloyds France SAS offices in Paris. Attendees enjoyed a lively discussion between two of the most well-informed economic pundits in France: Sophie Pedder and James Sproule. Sophie Pedder is the current Paris Bureau Chief of the Economist, writing about French politics and economics, and James Sproule has been Chief Economist and Director of Policy for the Institute of Directors since January 2014
The informative meeting focused on Franco-British and EU economic policies but also dipped into such topics as Indian IT services and overspending by the Japanese Government in the 90s, whilst still remaining pertinent to the core theme of the morning. Both Mr Sproule and Mrs Pedder gave a general recap of the current key topics before weighing in with some analysis and their own opinions on how to solve the matter, before ultimately giving their well-argued predictions for the future.
Some thought provoking questions, such as to what extent should the UK consider utilizing exchange rates to regulate its economy, and whether it was in fact true that a French businessman had famously sent Mrs Pedder’s 2012 book Le Déni Français to every deputy in France (which it is in fact), were fielded from the audience.
We’d like to thank everyone who came along for making this event such a great success. We also thank Lloyds France SAS for hosting us in their fabulously equipped office and the IOD for their contribution.
Finally, please keep your eyes pealed for more of these types of events in the future.
